Southern Tier woman found dead under Susquehanna River ice

Police in upstate New York say a woman is dead after being found under ice in the Susquehanna River.

Vestal police tell the Binghamton Press and Sun-Bulletin that 54-year-old Christine Mapes was declared dead after officers investigating a missing person report found tracks leading from a home to the river and her submerged body just after 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.

They say her death was apparently an accident, but they don't know how she ended up in the water. The investigation is continuing.

Vestal is just outside of Binghamton in Broome County.
