SP: Oneida Co. man drives drunk, kills passenger in crash

SCHUYLER, N.Y. -- An Oneida County man is behind bars after driving drunk and killing the passenger in his vehicle during a crash on State Route 5, according to New York State Police.

Troopers say 24-year-old Ammar T. Barakat was driving drunk when he lost control of his vehicle, went off the road and hit a snow embankment. The vehicle then struck a telephone pole and flipped on its roof.

Barakat suffered minor lacerations to his head as a result of the accident and was treated at the scene. 29-year-old Raymond M. Pinney from Herkimer was in the passenger seat at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

At the time of the accident Barakat's blood alcohol content, BAC, was .12%, according to troopers.

Barakat was arrested and now faces charges of vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, speeding and failure to keep right. He was arraigned in court and sent to the Herkimer County Jail with bail set at $10,000 cash, $30,000 bond.
