SP: Troopers seize 139 cartons of untaxed cigarettes, $20k from Oneida Co. man

An Oneida County was arrested after troopers found almost 150 cartons of untaxed cigarettes and over $20,000 while executing a search warrant, according to New York State Police.

62-year-old Richard E. McCauley is now facing felony tax fraud charges following a month long investigation.

On Thursday morning, authorities conducted a search of McCauley's home where troopers say they seized 139 cartons of untaxed, unstamped cigarettes, other assorted tobacco products and $20,000.

McCauley now faces charges of violation of NYS Section 1814 C1, possession and transportation of unstamped, untaxed Cigarettes, and violation of NYS Tax Law Section 1803, Criminal Tax Fraud 4th Degree. He was issued an appearance ticket and released.

Investigators from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance Tax Law were notified of the seizure and will confiscate all of the untaxed cigarettes and tobacco products at a later time.
