Sparklers could soon be lit in Oswego County

The Oswego County legislature has advanced a new local law that would legalize "sparkler devices."

"Its available in virtually every other county in the state," said Legislator James Weatherup, R-Central Square, Hasting. "People who want them will get them. We want them to buy them here locally."

The "sparkler devices" legalized would be either ground-based or hand-held. Fireworks that go airborne are still illegal.

Sales would only be permitted June 1 through July 5 and December 26th through January 2nd.

A public hearing will be held on June 15th at 7 p.m. at the county office building.

Currently, the devices are legalized for similar time-spans in the Central New York counties Seneca, Cayuga, Cortland, Madison and Oneida.

"Onondaga County could opt-in to allow wooden sparklers as many other counties have but we are not there at this time," said Ryan McMahon, R-Chairman of the Onondaga County Legislature. "We may consider it in the fall."

Firefighters across the region have been vocal in their opposition to the law.
