SPD: Attempted assault on SU student by Uber driver under investigation
SYRACUSE, N.Y. —
An investigation is underway after an attempted assault on a Syracuse University student by an Uber driver earlier this month, according to Syracuse Police.
Police say they will not be releasing any information until they complete their investigation.
"What's been described is deeply upsetting. We have removed the driver's access to the app and we have been in touch with local authorities to offer any information that could be helpful in their investigation," a spokesperson for Uber said in a statement.
There is no record of the trip from the alleged victims phone, according to Uber, however this could mean a number of things; The rider could have requested the ride via someone else's account, or it could have be an off ride, the company said Friday. Off rides occur when the driver picks up the rider randomly, without having requested the trip.
Uber has an incident response team that is currently working on this case, its spokesperson said. The spokesperson also noted Uber has former law enforcement officials who work with Syracuse Police on cases occurring in the Syracuse University community.
