State DOT taking public comments on I-81 plans

The New York State Department of Transportation is interested in what the community thinks should be done with the portion of Interstate 81 that runs through Syracuse.

Commissioner Joan McDonald announced that the DOT has posted the review of I-81 corridor to the I-81 challenge website.

The community has three weeks to weigh in on the study. The DOT will then compile and consider all suggestions as it moves into the next phase of the study, which consists of federal and environmental reviews.

Right now there are two options. One choice would re-route traffic along Route 481 around the city of Syracuse; another chouce would bring the elevated portion down to ground level, running through the city.

Central New Yorkers have so far expressed mixed feelings about the plans to re-build Interstate 81.
