State police confirm that they're searching a rural northern New York property amid reports that the investigation involves a missing couple.
Troopers say investigators are executing a search warrant at property in the St. Lawrence County town of Stockholm, 10 miles from the Canadian border. Officials say a forensic identification unit is processing the scene, where a box has been uncovered.
Police have released few other details, but local media report that they started digging up a section of the frozen ground this week.
District Attorney Mary Rain says the investigation began with a welfare fraud investigation.
A couple in their 80s had lived on the property, but they haven't been heard from in more than a year. Rain says a man who knew the couple is undergoing a mental health evaluation.
