State to buy cribs for families in need
Sat, 07 Sep 2013 16:51:46 GMT — For the second straight year, New York state is offering portable cribs to families in need.
It's part of the Cuomo administration's efforts to promote safe sleeping practices for infants.
The Office of Children and Families Services will buy over 2,000 portable play yards that will be made available to counties and community-based programs to benefit families who can't afford to buy them.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says reports to the state show that unsafe sleep conditions are a leading cause of child deaths.
Dangerous sleeping arrangements can result in suffocation or Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and have caused nearly one-third of child fatalities reported in New York state since 2010.
