Sterling man charged with trying to lure teens online for sex

Robert Stachura

A Sterling man is accused of trying to lure two teenagers online for sex.

44-year-old Robert Stachura is charged with attempted disseminating indecent material to a minor.

Cayuga County Sheriff's deputies say he posted an advertisement on Craigslist seeing sexual contact with minors. They say he also posted lewd pictures.

A detective, posing as a 15-year-old boy, started talking to Stachura on Craigslist. Investigators say he asked to meet with the 15-year-old and a 13-year-old friend for the purpose of a sexual encounter at the Village of Fair Haven park.

Deputies say Stachura intended to meet them there and take them to a private location nearby. Undercover deputies were waiting for him in the park. After talking to the deputy, Stachura left the park and was later arrested. Deputies seized a laptop computer and other physical evidence from his 2000 Ford Explorer "Eddie Bauer Edition." It is light green with tinted windows.

Stachura was arraigned in Sterling Town Court and sent to the Cayuga County Jail in lieu of $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond. More charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.

Sheriff's deputies are also in contact with the US Attorney's Office with regard to the potential filing of federal charges.

Anyone with information about the investigation should contact Detective Sergeant Frederick Cornelius at (315) 253-6562 or Detective Smith at (315) 253-4869.
