Students and staff remember beloved community member Heather Ely Tuesday with classes dismissed early

Heather Ely

Jordan-Elbridge High School dismissed early Tuesday so students and staff can attend funeral services for a beloved member of the Jordan-Elbridge community.

Heather Ely, 28, passed away Friday at Upstate University Hospital after a long battle with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. She was a teaching aide at Jordan-Elbridge High School, where she graduated in 2004.

Friends and family paid respects Monday at the Elbridge Community Church, where they spoke about her humor, selflessness and strength in a difficult battle.

"She always, always had a smile on her face," said close friend Amanda Brostek. "And she cared more about your day than she did about her own problems, from the tiniest things. So she was just a great person to have around, a great inspiration."

Ely was an accomplished lacrosse goalie during her time at Jordan-Elbridge. The district says " Mark Fietta described Ely as 'a fighter' who 'proved herself time and time again by aiming at her goals and achieving them.'"

According to Ely's obituary, funeral services are Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Elbridge Community Church.
