Students get backpacks filled with school supplies

Some 10,000 donated backpacks full of school supplies were donated to students in Syracuse on Saturday.

Many of the backpacks came from Say Yes to Education, a nonprofit that just completed its first year working with Syracuse public schools, having given out more than 600 college scholarships in June.

The backpacks were given out to needy students from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade at the city's eighth annual Youth Day Barbecue. The Barbeque kicked off with a parade of youths before the backpacks were distributed.

The event was started by Syracuse resident Mary Nelson, whose nephew was killed by gunfire. When she first started her campaign, she donated 850 backpacks, and that number has swelled to 10,000 this year.
