SU renews rivalry with Georgetown with new 4-year series

Fans of the Syracuse vs. Georgetown rivalry that were sad to see it go with the Orangeâ??s move to the ACC have reason to rejoice.

SU announced Tuesday that the schools will renew their longtime rivalry, starting in the 2015-2016 season with a four year, home-and-home series.

Georgetown will host the Orange at the Verizon Center in the 2015-2016 and 2017-2018 seasons, and the Orange will take on the Hoyas at the Carrier Dome in the 2016-2017 and 2018-2019 seasons. No dates for the games have been set as of yet.

â??Weâ??re excited to announce the renewal of the Georgetown-Syracuse rivalry,â?? Georgetown Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Lee Reed said. â??I know that our team and our fans will be excited to have a game against Syracuse on our schedule. This is something that both schools have worked very hard to have happen and weâ??re very happy to have this series continue.â??

The two programs have met 90 times since the birth of the Big East in 1979-80. The Orange holds the edge in the head-to-head matchups 49-41.

â??In the early days of the Big East Conference, the Syracuse-Georgetown matchup quickly developed into one of college basketballâ??s best rivalries,â?? said Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim. â??The games in that series have been played at a remarkably high level over the years. Weâ??re looking forward to the challenge of playing Georgetown again.â??

â??Georgetown against Syracuse is one of the great rivalries in college basketball,â?? Coach John Thompson said. â??From the days when my father was coaching against Coach (Jim) Boeheim to our most recent games, this is one of those games that generate passion from both sides.â??
