Suspect in Oswego purse theft in custody

The Oswego City Police say they have identified and located a suspect in a robbery that happened in Oswego on Wednesday.

On Wednesday at about 2:00 PM, police say they were dispatched to the Rise and Shine Convenience Store on East Oneida Street for a reported robbery.

Police say a man stole a purse from a customer outside of the store, saying that he had a gun. Then, he left the scene on foot.

The suspect was described as a white man, possibly in his late teens, about five-feet-seven-inches tall with a thin build, short brown hair and a possible black or bruised left eye.

Video surveillance outside of the store captured the robbery and aided police in the investigation.

The suspect was later identified as 22-year-old Joseph M. Barbera, of Oswego, who was subsequently located at the Fulton City Police Department were he was in custody on charges unrelated to the Robbery. Police say that, because he was already in custody by Fulton City Police, Oswego City Police Investigators were unable to make a physical arrest at that time.

Barbera was charged with first degree robbery, a felony.
