Syracuse couple scammed nearly $500,000 from contractors near Cooperstown

Authorities say they've charged a Syracuse couple with scamming nearly $500,000 from the contractors they hired to build a baseball complex near Cooperstown.

Officials in Otsego County say 57-year-old Jerry Arsenault Jr. and his 58-year-old wife, Camille Arsenault, were charged Wednesday with grand larceny and scheming to defraud.

They say the probe began in July 2011 when a Florida-based business told police a $20,000 check from the Arsenaults had bounced after bleachers were delivered to Diamond Dreams at Cooperstown, the couple's complex in the Herkimer County town of Warren, 10 miles north of Cooperstown.

Police say 19 other businesses were bilked out of a total of more than $470,000.

The Arsenaults are being held in the Otsego County Jail on $250,000 bail. Prosecutors don't know if they have a lawyer.
