Syracuse father pleads not guilty by reason of mental illness in son's drowning

A 27-year-old Syracuse man has pleaded not guilty by reason of mental illness to killing his three-year-old son, Ameen, in November 2011.

Marcell Washington is accused of forcing his sonâ??s head under cold water for ten minutes, then placing the boyhâ??s body in his bed. Washington claimed his son was possessed and was trying to rid the boy of the devil, who he called â??Shatanâ??.

Washington was indicted for second degree murder in March 2014. He has been diagnosed a paranoid schizophrenic.

Washington will be sent to a secure mental health facility, pending an examination by mental health professionals.
