Syracuse man arrested after police find loaded handgun

Police arrested a Syracuse man after responding to reports of a suspicious person with a handgun at 9:50 pm on Friday in the area of Cannon Street near West Brighton Avenue.

A responding officer found a man on the 100 block of Brighton Avenue that matched the suspect description. The officer recognized 24-year-old Javiel Simpson, as he knew there was an active warrant out for his arrest.

The officer tried to stop Simpson, but he ran. Onondaga County Sheriffâ??s Deputies in the area helped police stop Simpson after a short foot chase.

Police found a loaded Taurus .45 caliber handgun on Simpson when he was taken into custody.

Police found that the handgun was stolen.

Simpson was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of stolen property and unlawful possession of marijuana.
