Syracuse man gets 97 years in prison for sexually assaulting elderly woman

A Syracuse man will spend the rest of his life behind bars for sexually assaulting an elderly woman at her apartment in 2003.

45-year-old Vincent Torres appeared in Onondaga County Court this morning and was sentenced to 97 years in prison.

Back in May, he was convicted of burglary, sexual abuse, attempted sexual abuse and sodomy last month.

Judge William Walsh sentenced Torres to 25 years for burglary, 15 years for attempted sodomy, 25 years for sodomy and 7 years for sexual abuse.

Judge Walsh calls the crime the worst and ordered the sentences to run consecutively. He says the woman, now 84-years-old, feels better knowing Torres won't "see the light of day" for 97 years.

The victim's daughter says her mother has forgiven him.

Torres claims he's innocent and says the woman initiated the sexual encounter.
