A 53-year-old Syracuse man standing trial for stabbing his two pit bulls with a bayonet says he did it to save someone else's pet.
Francis Mason's jury trial began Tuesday in Syracuse City Court. He's charged with two counts of animal cruelty.
Defense lawyer David Zukher asked Judge Vanessa Bogan to dismiss the charges because Mason was justified. The judge ruled the trial would go forward.
When police arrived at Mason's house last March, they found him covered in blood in the front yard. He told them he stabbed the dogs with a 10-inch bayonet after they ignored commands to leave the other dog alone.
One of Mason's dogs died and the other survived serious stab wounds after being taken to an animal hospital.
