Syracuse man sentenced to 25 years to life for murdering his girlfriend

A 39-year-old Syracuse convicted of beating his 18-year-old live-in girlfriend to death has been sentenced to from 25 years to life in prison.

The Syracuse Post-Standard reportsreports Craig Owens was sentenced Wednesday in Onondaga County Court, where a jury found him guilty last month of beating and strangling Letisha Hayes in their Syracuse apartment on Dec. 24, 2011.

Hayes was found unconscious and severely beaten on Steuben Street. She later died from severe head and facial trauma.

Owens continued to maintain his innocence. His lawyer says he'll appeal the conviction.
