Syracuse Mayor survives plane scare and fight with Governor

A New York Times feature article on Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner reveals a recent drama on board a flight from Newark, New Jersey. The article reports the plane carrying the Mayor filled with smoke, the temperature inside the plane plunged, and a very concerned flight attendant ordered all passengers to the back of the aircraft. The plane landed safely.

"All of the sudden," she said, "it put it in all in perspective," the Mayor told The Times. She was talking about the recent political storm brewing with Governor Andrew Cuomo over his budget - and how it deals with rising pension costs.

The Times indicates, "Ms. Miner's rhetoric and public criticism of the governor have raised questions about her ambitions. But she says she was simply seeking to attract attention to the fiscal woes of cities like her own."
