Teen driver careens into Salina store hitting 5 year-old girl

A 5 year-old girl is in the hospital after a car crashed through the front of a Hess gas station in the town of Salina.

The Onondaga County Sheriffâ??s office says the little girl was standing in the doorway of the gas station around 7:45 p.m. Monday when 17 year-old Joseph Puma of Syracuse accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake pedal and propelled his car forward.

Puma was pulling into a parking space, but deputies say his car ended up jumping the sidewalk and hitting the little girl before continuing through the front of the store.

The 5 year-old from Liverpool was pinned between Pumaâ??s car and some store shelving until emergency responders arrived and freed her. She suffered some cuts and bruises, and was taken to University Hospital with minor injuries.

Puma was not injured in the crash but was also taken to University Hospital to be evaluated.

Deputies are still investigating what happened, and no tickets have been issued at this time.

The gas station on Seventh North Street and Electronics Parkway is closed until the town Codes Department clears the building as safe.
