Teens thrown from ATV in hit and run crash

Deputies in Oswego County say unsafe speed and driver inexperience appear to have been factors in a head-on ATV crash earlier this month.

Deputies say a 15-year-old male, from West Monroe, was driving a 2011 Yamaha ATV eastbound on a county trail in the Town of Constantia on Saturday night, May 4, when a 2006 Yamaha ATV reportedly swerved into the teenâ??s path, causing a head-on collision.

Each ATV also had a passenger. All four riders were reportedly thrown from the ATVs, deputies say.

The teen, and a 17-year-old passenger, were both transported by ambulance to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.

Deputies say the 2006 Yamaha ATV, registered to 19-year-old Christian G. Ortiz of Utica, was operated by an unknown driver. The operator and passenger left the scene. They were reportedly not wearing helmets.
