The Priscilla Mahar Animal Welfare Foundation held it's third annual Canine Carnival at Long Branch Park in Liverpool, NY Saturday August 4th, and despite temperatures in the 90s, it was record breaker with more than 8000 people attending and 50 animal rescues from as far away as New York City and New Jersey.
The numbers below tell the story of how the Canine Carnival is fast becoming a major event for central New York.
8000 people attended (the first Canine Carnival three years ago had 1500 to 2000 people)
50 rescue/foster organizations represented (the first Canine Carnival three years ago had 14 rescues)
25+ business-type and food vendors
THE MOST important news is there were dozens, if nothundreds of animals adopted. Marsha's Mulligans out of Constantia, NY, a senior dog rescue, had eight dogs adopted at Canine Carnival and more than 35 registrations for other dog adoptions. The Badass Brooklyn Foster and Rescue ( yes, their real name ) out of Brooklyn, NY was very pleased to have three dogs adopted making their trip home a happy one.
Along with the new location, this years Canine Carnival featured other new items like a Red Cross Blood Drive (which they were also happy since they exceeded their goal for this blood mobile), a live concert, a Sports Zone, carnival rides and a giant "misting tent" for both people and pets to cool off. That was VERY popular. Veterinary Medical Center of CNY (VMC CNY) set up an emergency animal triage center on site which
Our Silent Auction included autographed sports memorabilia from Syracuse University basketball and the Syracuse Crunch.
Canine Carnival 2012 had four primary sponsors, Liverpool Village Animal Hospital, Wegmans, CNYcentral and Veterinary Medical Center of CNY. I and my PMAWF Committee are thankful for their interest and backing of this event. I also want to sincerely thank Laura, Stephanie, Caitlin, Jen, Marissa and my PMAWF Committee for their hard work and dedication, especially Lisa Chelenza who helped me start the PMAWF almost five years ago on behalf of my Mother who passed away in March 2007.
Also to be thanked are the many fantastic volunteers, rescues and vendors who participated, and the many donors we had helping with a variety of things from Arrow Fence setting up a temporary Good Dog walking area to Able Smith Tent, Dinosaur Bar B Que and Great Music Company. Special thanks to the thousands who attended, County Parks, Rural Metro and County EMS and the many others who helped.
Monies raised by the PMAWF and Canine Carnival will be donated back to various CNY animal welfare and rescue organizations.
More than $20,000 has been donated to CNY organizations in the past few years.
