Tire explosion and car fire sparks panic at New Jersey mall

A tire explosion and car fire sent shoppers running on Sunday night at the Garden State Plaza mall in Paramus, New Jersey.

Many shoppers mistakened the sounds of the explosion as gunfire when the car caught fire outside the Macy's store just after 8 p.m.

Police secured the mall area and evacuated shoppers. Traffic was significantly backed up on a nearby highway as guests tried leaving the mall parking lot.

Police were inside the mall investigating to make sure there had not been a shooting incident.

A few people suffered minor injuries from slipping and falling in the mall. The mall was closed around 10 p.m., when police were finishing evacuating people.

Garden State Plaza made headlines back in November when a man fired several shots in the mall before killing himself.
