Tornado Warnings, Severe Thunderstorms

UPDATE as of 8:35pm:

A TORNADO WARNING has been issued for southern Chenango county and extreme southern Otsego county until 9:00pm. Doppler Radar indicated a thudnerstorm "capable" of producing a tornado in this area, moving east at 50 mph. This is NOT in the CNY area and is NOT a confirmed tornado.

A severe thunderstorm warning continues for Chenango and Otsego counties until 9:15pm, but the watch has been DISCONTINUED for most other parts of CNY.


If your area has a severe thunderstorm warning, here is what you should do: -- If you are outdoors, get inside your home, a strong building, or in your car. If there is no building nearby, your best protection is in a cave or ditch. Boaters should head to shore immediately. -- When indoors, go to an interior room on the lowest level. Stay away from windows and doors. Do not use electrical appliances. Do not use the telephone, except in an emergency. -- If you are driving, pull over to the side of the road until the storm passes. Heavy rain with any thunderstorm can flood roads quickly. Never try to drive through an area where water covers the road, even if you think it is shallow. This water may


severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect for parts of central New York. This includes the following counties: Onondaga, Oneida, Cayuga, Oneida, Schuyler, Cortland, Chemung, Seneca, Tompkins, Chenango, Madison, Otsego, Steuben, Yates

This severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 10pm.

A severe thunderstorm watch
is issued to alert you to the possibility that thunderstorms containing damaging winds of 58 mph or higher and/or large hail of 1â?? in diameter or bigger may develop at some point during the next several hours. A watch does not mean severe weather is occurring. A warning is issued when severe weather is imminent.If your area has a severe thunderstorm watch, here is what you should do: -- Go about your normal activities, but be aware of the possibility of severe weather developing. -- Keep an eye on Interactive Doppler and Triple Doppler radars on -- Keep your phone with your CNYcentral mobile app turned on so if warnings are issued you will know. -- Periodically check NBC-3, CBS-5 and CW-6 for updates on the weather and possible warnings. We are on the air on Channels 3 and 5 at 5,6 11 and 11pm.
