The trial for a man charged with killing his 18-year-old girlfriend inside her upstate New York college dorm room has been postponed until next year to give prosecutors time for psychiatric evaluation.
The Utica Observer-Dispatch reports Thursday that 22-year-old Clayton Whittemore's second-degree murder trial is now scheduled to begin Jan. 27 in Rochester. Defense attorney Mark Curley says Monroe County prosecutors asked for more time to evaluate Whittemore's mental state at the time of Alexandra Kogut's slaying.
The trial originally was set to begin Sept. 30, a year after Kogut was fatally beaten at the State University of New York College at Brockport.
Curley plans to argue that Whittemore, of New Hartford, was emotionally disturbed. He told police he "snapped" after an argument.
