Troopers identify man in serious crash in Sullivan

The crash scene late Friday morning.

State police have identified the man who was in a serious crash in Madison County Friday morning.

Troopers say Michael Mumford, 44, of Sherrill was the driver of the pickup truck that hit a tree just after 11 a.m. He's in critical condition at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.

Troopers say Mumford was driving along State Route 31, near the intersection with Lestina Beach Road and the entrance to Chapman Park, in the Town of Sullivan when he suddenly crossed over the westbound lane, off the north shoulder of the road and struck a tree.

The call came into 911 at approximately 11:04 a.m. The truck was severely damaged, so much so that the headlights and wiring were found on the ground 25 yards away.

Several fire and rescue vehicles and State Police responded to the scene.

Troopers are still investigating the crash.
