Tully man drives through trail gate, gets DWI charge

      James Hobart

State police say a 41-year-old man was highly intoxicated when he drove a pick-up truck through the locked gate at state-owned recreational land in Central New York.

Troopers say they got a report Tuesday from Cortland County 911 dispatchers that a pick-up had slammed through the gate and driven up the hiking trail at the Labrador Hollow Unique Area straddling the Onondaga County line 15 miles south of Syracuse.

The Onondaga County sheriff's helicopter spotted the truck stuck in the mud about 2½ miles up the trail. Police say 41-year-old James E. Hobart of Tully refused to get out of his truck and struggled with officers.

Troopers say Hobart's blood-alcohol content was .17%, more than twice the legal limit.

Hobart was charged with driving while intoxicated, criminal trespass and resisting arrest. He was arraigned in Homer Town Court and is free on bail. Prosecutors didn't know if he has a lawyer.
