You could say spelling is in their b-l-o-o-d.
After spelling extinguish correctly, Tyler Piper,11, took first place in the spelling bee at Jordan Elbridge Middle School but he had some stiff competition from his twin sister Tristan.
"I looked at her and I was like this is never going to stop. I knew she was a good speller and I didn't think I was going to win," says Tyler Piper.
The championship round came down to the twins , but even after her brother took the gold, Tristan still felt like a winner.
"I was thinking that at least we both get to win it," says Tristan Piper.
Their parents, Amanda and Jason, can't take credit for the spelling wiz kids, but they are very proud.
"I was laughing and crying all at once. Actually my daughter's previous teacher came up to me and said he had more fun watching my reaction than actually watching the twins on stage," says Amanda Piper.
"My first initial reaction was amazement that both my kids got first and second place. And my second reaction was how did my daughter take it that Tyler beat her," says Jason Piper.
"The competition isn't over for Tyler and Tristan. From here they go to another spelling bee at OCC in January and if they win that they'll both compete in a televised statewide competition.
The twins are moving forward as a team, studying together, hoping for another win.
