Two dead after car overturns, catches fire near Sylvan Beach

State Police say two people are dead and one passenger was able to escape after their car struck a tree, overturned, and caught fire in the Town of Vienna.

20-year-old Tyler Laplante was driving a 2003 Chevrolet Impala northbound on Vienna Road outside of Sylvan beach around 2am.

So far the investigation has found he failed to make a right hand turn because of unsafe driving speed. The car went off the left shoulder of the road, struck a tree, and overturned.

22-year-old passenger Justin Didio of Oneida was able to escape from the burning car and call for help.

A fire started and the car became fully engulfed with Laplante and a rear passenger, 21-year-old Angelo Gonzalez of Camden, still inside.

The fire department from the Village of Sylvan Beach arrived on the scene and put the fire out. Laplante and Gonzalez were then pronounced dead on the scene, but an autopsy is still underway to determine the cause of death.

Police believe alcohol may have been a factor contributing to the crash.
