UPDATE: Oswego man drowns rescuing child in Lake Ontario

An Oswego man drowned Saturday afternoon after he helped rescue a child who was having trouble swimming in Lake Ontario.

According to the Cayuga County Sheriffâ??s Office, Adam McKelvey, 42, was swimming in Lake Ontario near 8 Mile Creek with his family and friends.

One of the children began to have trouble swimming and McKelvey and others went to help the child.

Troopers say thatâ??s when McKelvey became fatigued and went under the water.

The child was brought to shore safely.

Several people called 911 and an Oswego County Sheriffâ??s boat patrol was dispatched and found McKelvey unresponsive.

He was taken to Oswego Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
