Upstate NY man, 23, imprisoned for killing baby

A 23-year-old northern New York man has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for killing his girlfriend's 7-month-old baby.

Gary McKenzie of the St. Lawrence County village of Gouverneur was sentenced on Monday. In exchange for the sentence of 21 years, he pleaded guilty in May to first-degree manslaughter for the July 2013 death of Braylin Chambers.

McKenzie was originally charged with second-degree murder and other felonies and could have faced life in prison.

He was babysitting the child at the home he shared with the baby's mother, Savanna Goble, when Braylin was fatally injured. He told St. Lawrence County Judge Jerome Richards he was frustrated with the child and threw him into a bouncy seat. The baby's head hit a wall, causing a lethal brain injury.
