DANSVILLE, N.Y. (WHAM) -- You could call it one heck of a thank you gift.

William Shaffer, Jr. received a scratch off lottery ticket from his sister and brother-in-law as a gift for helping them with projects around the house.

William is not a big lottery player, but his brother-in-law and sister are. So when he scratched off the Cash Word ticket and won $1 million, he was more than a little surprised.

"It's shocking," Shaffer said at a news conference Friday. "For them to play a lot and for me not to play, it's pretty crazy."

Shaffer works as a painter and said he is taking the one-time lump sum payment of $661,000.

His plans for the money? Buying his father a truck, taking care of his family and taking a vacation.
