U.S. DOT issues safety advisory, calls for crackdown on speeding trains

Metro-North crash that killed 4 people on December 1.

The U.S. Department of Transportationâ??s Federal Railroad Administration, or FRA, today announced an industry-wide safety advisory, making sure all federal regulations involving maximum speeds are being followed. This, in response to the Metro-North derailment that claimed four lives on December 1.

â??Safety is our highest priority, and the Metro-North crash illustrates how important it is for railroads to follow speed limits,â?? said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. â??This Safety Advisory, along with the other enforcement measures weâ??ve taken, will remind all employees of the need to follow speed limits and will help improve safety across all rail lines.â??

Last week, the FRA issued an emergency order to Metro-North Commuter Railroad, calling for it to modify the signal system and make sure operators are obeying speed limits.
