Hundreds of firearms were turned in to the Utica Police Department on Saturday in exchange for money as part of a gun buyback program.
The three-and-a-half hour event brought many people to the Utica Memorial Auditorium to exchange their weapons for debit cards. Gun owners got $50 for their rifles and shotguns, and $100 for assault weapons. Utica police say people also brought in handguns and illegally modified firearms.
The buyback was a joint effort by the Utica Police Department and the State Attorney Generalâ??s office. A press conference will be held soon with Utica police and the Attorney Generalâ??s office to discuss the success of the event.
