An officer killed in the line of duty more than 20 years ago was honored once again on Wednesday with the rededication of a playground at Van Duyn School.
Officer Wallie Howard Jr. was killed during an undercover drug buy on Syracuseâ??s South Side 23 years ago. The rededication of the park took place on the date of his murder.
The park on is located on Loomis Avenue, the street Howard lived on when he was killed.
The playground was burnt down by vandals in 2009. Retired Syracuse officers teamed with Syracuse University engineering students to rebuild the park.
Onondaga Countyâ??s forensic science center is also named after Officer Howard.
