Vernon teen who killed father at 13 sentenced for attempted robbery in NYC

      Joseph Giacona III, 2008

A teenager who killed his abusive father at their central New York home in 2008 is headed to prison for an attempted robbery in New York City.

The Observer-Dispatch of Utica reports that Joseph Giacona III was sentenced last week in a Manhattan court to 3 1/2 years in state prison for trying to steal money at knifepoint from a woman last February.

Giacona was 13 when he used a shotgun to fatally shoot his 37-year-old father as he slept on a couch in their home in Vernon, near Utica.

The teen pleaded guilty in 2009 to first-degree manslaughter. He was placed in a juvenile detention facility until he was released in 2010.

Prosecutors say Giacona had been subjected to emotional and physical abuse by his father.
