Video forecast: Where is the snow heading next?

A winter storm warning is in effect for Oswego, Jefferson, Lewis, Wayne, Herkimer, Saint Lawrence, northern Cayuga and northern Herkimercounties. This winter storm warning is in effect through 7am Thursday.

A winter storm warning means that significant winter weather is likely over widespread areas during the period outlined. The previous winter weather advisory for Onondaga, Seneca, Oneida, and southern Cayuga counties has been cancelled.

In this winter storm situation, here is what we are watching :Most of central New York should just encounter wet roadways today. Across western and far northern New York from Watertown to Alex Bay to Ogdenburg and the Saint Lawrence valley, also as predicted yesterday, the precipitation remained mainly as snow. Therefore, these locations have worse travel and snow covered conditions.Through the midday and afternoon:Expect any leftover light rain to change to light snow. Little to no accumulation will occur in central New York through most of the day. During the mid to late afternoon, snow showers should become enhanced off of Lake Ontario. As temperatures approach the 32 mark late this afternoon, a coating to 1" or so of snow will be possible by sunset. Previous wet conditions on the roads will become snow covered and icy in spots on untreated roads, sidewalks and driveways close to sunset or thereafter. Keep that in mind for travel late today locally.

From Wednesday sunset through Thursday sunrise:A spray of snow showers across central New York being enhanced off of Lake Ontario should continue through the overnight. A west-northwest wind flow should ensure many spots should receive 2-5" of snow southeast of Lake Ontario and over much of the immediate central New York area by sunrise Thursday. Within that spray of 2-5", there will be some localized areas that could see between 5-8". Those higher amounts will be the exception rather than rule and will occur in some thin lines of persistent squalls. Regardless, with temperatures falling into the lower 20s, untreated roads, sidewalks and driveways will become snow covered and icy. As the lake effect snow develops later this afternoon through this evening, here is what you shoud do:-- Keep an eye on Interactive Doppler and Triple Doppler radars on CNYcentral.com.-- Keep your phone with your CNYcentral mobile app turned on so if warnings are issued you will know.-- Periodically check NBC-3, CBS-5 and CW-6 for updates on the weather and possible issuance of lake effect snow warnings and advisories.-- Know which county you live in, and where you are in relation to other counties, especially if you are travelling.-- If you need to travel, be prepared for very difficult driving conditions.-- Have a winter storm kit ready in your car in case you are stranded.Stay updated with this situation with these links:-- Interactive Doppler Radar-- Triple Doppler Radar -- Lightning Strikes-- Watches/Warnings: (Make sure to hit the 'F5' key to refresh the page.) -- Follow CNY Central Meteorologists on Twitter:
