Volunteers needed for cancer study
Sun, 09 Oct 2011 19:42:33 GMT —
The Cancer Society will be signing up volunteers to be part of a decades long study aimed at pinpointing the causes of cancer. They want to enroll a half million nationwide, including people here in Central New York.
Volunteers, from 30 to 65 years old, will be surveyed and will need to give a small amount of blood on signup, and then will be re-surveyed every two to three years.
Lisa Smith, Regional Vice President of the American Cancer Society, based in East Syracuse, says this will be the third major study on links to cancer. The first, in the 1950s, linked cigarette smoking to lung cancer and led to warning labels on cigarette packages. The second, started in 1982, is still ongoing, and is looking at such things as waist size and links to cancer.
The study starting up is looking for people who've never had cancer, 30 to 65 years old, who are willing to be re-interviewed every two to three years. Area signups are Wednesday to Saturday at University Hospital or Community General, and at area YMCAs. (888) 664-5888 will let you sign up for an enrollment appointment, or go to thecancer study website for more information and signup info.
