A 5K Run/Walk, followed by an evening of live music, food and raffles, is planned in tribute to Joe LaGuardia, the long-time State Fair marketing director and Syracuse Inner Harbor Lakefront Execcutive Director . It will be on May 14th, the first anniversry of his passing from a rare blood protein disorder.
Joe's wife Carol and their daughter Lori Harrington have organized the event, saying it will reflect his love of music.
Carol also tells us she wants to raise community awareness of Amyloidosis, which she says is often masked, or misdiagnosed. She says tipoffs include high albumen counts in blood tests, or foaming urine. The event was originally planned as a fundraiser for Joe's mounting medical bills. Now, proceeds will go to the Amyloidosis Foundation to spread awareness and fund a cure.
The location is Syracuse's Inner Harbor, Tuesday May 14th 4-11pm. The race will have a 'shotgun' start at 5:30pm.
