Watertown father accused of assaulting baby

A Watertown father is accused of assaulting his 2-month-old baby.

26-year-old Willie D. Smith III, of Plaza Drive, is charged with assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

The baby was taken to Samaritan Medical Center with two fractured arms, two fractured legs, fractured ribs and several fractures of the skull. State Police say the injuries were determined to be in various stages of healing and that some could be life threatening. The infant was later transferred to Upstate Medical Center.

Police say investigators alerted by a call to an abuse hotline found the 2-month-old boy with injuries, some in the process of healing and some possibly life-threatening.

Police say Smith punched the infant in the head with a closed fist earlier last month.

Smith was arraigned in the Town of Theresa court and was sent to the Jefferson County Public Safety Building on $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond.

The Watertown Daily Times reports that Smith previously served time in prison for breaking a 2-year-old girlâ??s bones in 2007 when he slammed her into a wall. It was the second time he had been accused of breaking the childâ??s bones that year. Police documents indicate Smith was angry at the childâ??s mother. He was released from prision in 2008.
