West Genesee Marching Band wins National Championship
The West Genesee Wildcat band has won a national title for the first time since 1990.
Competing at MetLife Stadium on Saturday, the Wildcats won the Open class, competing against bands from New York, New Jersey and Georgia. They had the second highest overall score of the 58 bands in the competition.
It's the second major title in two weeks for the marching band: last Sunday they won the New York State Field Bands competition.
Jillian Breault is the band's drum major. "Your hearts going, you don't really remember it. You come off the field and you just remember walking on to the field and you remember walking off of the field and everything in between is just a blur, now its just its all paid off and it's kind of a relief, but it's just great," says Breault.
Mike Stachnik is the director for the Wildcats. "A
t first I was just a little surprised, a little dumbfounded. They announced second place and it was a different band than us and were like wow we did it we took this thing! It felt terrific
," says Stachnik.
Beverly Karsteter has a daughter in the band. "I
t was amazing because the competition was fabulous it was fantastic, we had no idea but to win it was just mind blowing
," says Karsteter.
