Wind chill alerts for most of CNY

Dangerously cold wind chills earlier today and more will be coming this night. While temperatures will not be as cold, they will still be frigid and way below zero degrees. In some places this situation will again feature wind chills which will cause frost bite in a short time period. Here is the latest alert information:

      For tonight through midday Wednesday:

A wind chill WARNING is in effect for Jefferson, Lewis and Oswego counties 10pm Thursday night until noon Friday.

A wind chill ADVISORY is in effect for Onondaga, Cortland, Madison, Oneida, Chenango and Otsego counties until 8am Thursday.

Here are some specific details for today's cold weather:

For tonight, a combination of cold temperatures and a slight wind is creating icy wind chills and temperatures. Temperatures overnight to fall to between -1 and -10° below zero for Syracuse and much of the immediate CNY area along the I-81 corridor. Wind chills will drop to between -10 to -20° below zero for this same area. Temperatures and wind chills will be even lower across eastern areas and the North Country. For example, the North Country temperatures will drop to between -10 to -20° below zero. Wind chills for the North Country should be between -20 and -30° below zero.

If you look at the wind chill chart you can get frostbite in 30 minutes on any exposed skin when the wind chill is -20° (below zero). You can get frostbite in about 20 minutes when the wind chills is -30° (below zero). If the wind chills gets to -40° (below zero), then you can get frostbite in 10 minutes. I do not expect the wind chill to get to as low -40° in central New York.

Make sure you are aware of how cold the temperature and wind chills are. If you are going outside to remove the snow from your driveway or you need to be outside for any length of time, take frequent breaks and come inside to warm up to avoid frostbite.

Speaking of snowfall, most of the important snow in the forecast again through tonight will be between Fair Haven, Sodus Point, Sodus, Webster and Rochester. Other snow showers will be located over portions of the Finger Lakes, especially south of the Finger Lakes. Please remember that with these bitterly cold temperatures, the salt brine mixture that the plows use to melt the snow is much less effective than normal. Therefore, roads that receive snowfall will be extra slippery than normal.

If your area has wind chill warnings or advisories, here is what you should do:

-- If you must be outdoors, use common sense and dress warmly.

-- Make sure that all exposed skin is covered. If possible, avoid prolonged exposure to the cold to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.

-- Do not leave pets outside.
