Syracuse and central New York will have a tough combination of sub-zero temperatures and bitterly cold wind chills through Friday night. Weather alerts remain in effect.
A wind chill warning is in effect for Onondaga and most counties in CNY until 9am Saturday.
Wind chill warnings are issued when strong winds will combine with very cold temperatures to create dangerously cold conditions for exposed skin over the next 12-24 hours. If you must be outdoors, use common sense and dress warmly. Make sure that all exposed skin is covered. If possible, avoid prolonged exposure to the cold to prevent frostbite and hypothermia.
Here is what we are watching in this particular situation:
While the snowfall is over, the coldest air of the season so far is here. The combination of these frigid temperatures between -10° (below zero) and near 0° and light winds of 0-10 MPH will create wind chills commonly between -20° and -10° (below zero) through tonight for many areas. Occasionally, the wind chills could get as low as -20 to -30° (below zero). If you look at the wind chills charts that I posted, you can get frostbite in 30 minutes on any exposed skin when the wind chill is -20° (below zero). You can get frostbite in about 20 minutes when the wind chills is -30° (below zero). If the wind chills gets to -40° (below zero), then you can get frostbite in 10 minutes. I do not expect the wind chill to get to as low -40° in central New York.
Regardless, since many of us have to dig out of the recent snowfall make sure you are aware of how cold the temperature and wind chills are. If you are going outside to remove the snow from your driveway or you need to be outside for any length of time, take frequent breaks and come inside to warm up to avoid frostbite.
