Winter storm warning for parts of CNY until 10pm

A winter storm WARNING remains in effect for areas north and northwest of Onondaga County until 10pm Wednesday.

A winter storm warning means that significant winter weather is likely over widespread areas during the period outlined.

A winter weather ADVISORY is in effect for Jefferson and northwestern St. Lawrence counties from until 10pm Wednesday.

An advisory is in effect here for lower accumulations for this area. Areas closer to the Canadian border will see even less snowfall by comparison.

In this winter storm situation, here is what we are watching
      :

The snow storm continues to moves east this evening at a steady pace which will bring an end to the snow in the next few hours in all locations. Some areas of light snow will be moving off and tapering to localized lake effect scattered flurries by 1am. Additional minor snowfall amounts are expected this evening before this takes place, generally an additional inch or less.

Brisk north to northwest winds will also create blowing and drifting snow and with nightfall there will be limited visibilities at times. Continue to use caution. If you can put off traveling until the morning road conditions will be much improved. We expect some minor lake snow showers and flurries on Thursday but nothing that will cause a major disruption like what took place Wednesday.

Watch our TV broadcasts to see how much more snow we are forecasting for where you live.

If your area has a winter storm warning, here is what you should do

      :

-- Significant winter weather will be occurring in the warned area. Be prepared for difficult and hazardous travel at times in the warned area.

-- Keep an eye on Interactive Doppler and Triple Doppler radars on CNYcentral.com.

-- Keep your phone with your CNYcentral mobile app turned on so if warnings are issued you will know.

-- Periodically check NBC-3, CBS-5 and CW-6 for updates on the weather and possible issuance of lake effect snow warnings and advisories.

-- Know which county you live in, and where you are in relation to other counties, especially if you are travelling.

-- Have a winter storm kit ready in your car in case you are stranded.
