Fire on Midland Ave, a life lost: Matt's Memo
I grew up visiting my grandparents on Midland Avenue. My parents, my brothers and I would take what seemed like a lengthy drive from the Liverpool suburbs, south on 81 to the Brighton exit. A couple of turns on streets like Matson and Ballantyne and we would pull into the driveway at 2820 Midland. As a news reporter stories that happen on Midland always catch my ear. Tonight was one of those nights.
A 911 call went out to the fire department at 6:00 pm tonight. A fire at 1435 Midland Avenue. A few minutes into the response we heard the radio call from firefighters. They found one person inside. The fire chief later told us the woman did not have a chance. He also said firefighters had been at the house just ten days prior because of what he graciously described as house keeping issues and a lack of smoke detectors.
Our reporter Mary Kielar talked with a lovely neighbor at the scene tonight who also said the 60 year old woman who did may have had a disability or illness. Making matters worse her roommate recently died. That funeral is scheduled for tomorrow.
We don't know yet what started the fire. We don't know yet the name of the woman who died. We do know it's the smoke that often takes a life when there is fire in a home.
I remember Midland Avenue. Plenty of good people living there. Sad to see a woman in need lost her life tonight.
