North Carolina's governor says state officials hope to have the bridge to Hatteras Island and its two-lane highway open by late tomorrow, despite some damage caused by Hurricane Arthur.
The hurricane left tens of thousands of people without power along the North Carolina coast.
After passing over the southern end of the Outer Banks, it weakened to a Category 1 storm with top sustained winds of about 90 miles an hour. Forecasters expect it to weaken further.
Meanwhile, a new tropical storm warning was issued for Nova Scotia in Canada, where Arthur is expected to head as it moves northeast.
