Watch: Ohio soldier reunites with his son before football game
WORTHINGTON, Ohio -- An Ohio seventh grader got the surprise of his life just before the start of his football game Wednesday night.
His father, deployed to the middle east for months, surprised his son on the gridiron and the two had a tearful reunion.
"About a week ago, I talked to my wife and she contacted the school and we kind of had an idea that we wanted to surprise him," said Staff Sergeant Michael Beckert.
Michael's son Chase Beckert plays linebacker for the Worthington Cardinals. Unbeknownst to Chase, Michael and the rest of his family worked with Worthington school's athletic director and came with the plan to have Michael meet Chase on the field just before the game.
Fast forward to game day, when Chase joined three teammates for the customary pregame handshake and coin toss, only to find his father waiting for him. After an emotional reunion, Chase asked his teammates for one more thing.
"I want the Cards to win for my dad and military families all over the world," said Chase Beckert.
The Cardinals delivered, winning 38-8.
