Where are Americans having the most babies?
(KUTV) You might wanna sit down for this one, folks. A Bloomberg study has found that most American babies are coming from the Provo/Orem area with Salt Lake City and the Ogden area cracking the top 5 as well.
Bloomberg used U.S. Census data to determine whose cities had the highest share of babies in their buggies as of July 2014.
In Utah “you have a young population combined with a high fertility rate,” Mark Mather, associate vice president for domestic programs at the Population Reference Bureau told Bloomberg.
Mather added that something many of the top cities have in common is high numbers of young households.
Bloomberg reports Provo Mayor John Curtis credited the high numbers to the city housing Brigham Young University and the high Mormon population.
“Mormons like big families—we’re not bashful about that at all,” Curtis said.
Provo/Orem took the cake with a whopping 21.4 babies per 1,000 people. Ogden-Clearfield came in at no. 3 with 17.2 and Salt Lake rounded out the top 5 with 16.6.
The other cities in the top 5 were Texas’ McAllen-Edinburg-Mission in Texas and California’s Bakersfield.
