Toyota High School Athlete of the Week- Julianna Cavanagh
Oneida High School junior Julianna Cavanagh has been named the Toyota High School Athlete of the Week after capturing the New York State Division II Triple Jump title over the weekend.
The junior leaped 37 feet, 11.25 inches into the sand, finishing over a foot further than the second place finisher. The jump helped Cavanagh break a 30-year old school record.
Cavanagh said the immediate reaction between her and her coaches was one of pure awe and excitement.
“When I got done, I was walking back and then I heard the officials say ‘37 (feet), 11 (inches),” Cavanagh recalls. “Me and my coaches were going crazy. It was the best thing ever.”
Despite entering the triple jump event seeded third in the field, Cavanagh relished the idea of having to prove herself.
“Going into the meet, I was very nervous being seeded third, which is kind of a high seed for me. I kind of like being the underdog.”
Cavanagh said the best part of her title victory was being able to share it with her coaches and teammates.
“I was really excited to get this for my coaches and my teammates because they have been supporting throughout this whole season and I couldn’t have done it without them,” Cavanagh explained. “Their confidence in me was unreal.”
Cavanagh added representing her school in the state championships was a great experience as well.
“It was great to represent Oneida like that, and it was such an honor to be there with the greatest track athletes in New York State.”
